The Spanish have something going on now that – if you were a card player- would describe as "a run" – or a "curso". First, their national soccer team wins the World Championship, then Rafael Nadal grabs the most important Tennis Cup 

- the Wembleton, and now- this weekend, Alberto Contador wins the Tour de France.

So, we  say – they may be good in sports, but otherwise …there comes the bank stress test and – who is on top? Banca March from ???? You guessed it – Spain. When you finally consider that in July 2010 Javier Bardem – a Spaniard – married Penelope Cruz – a woman who’s been chased by all kind of Hollywood-stars for decades – sigh ….yes – she would have married YOU if you were but a Spaniard – for sure!!

But this is a blog about travel – that’s why I’m also telling you – if you ever wanted to walk the Jakobs-Path in a Pilgrimage (ending at the big cathedral in Santiago di Compostela, Spain)- you’d better do it within the next 12 month, or you postpone it another 11 years. Why? This is the "Holy Year of St. Jakobs" and it just  started at his birthday July 25th (Sunday). All pilgrims doing a pilgrimage in a "holy year" get ALL their sins forgiven. Be sure you’ll not be alone – they expect 250.000 pilgrims this year – and since Paul Cuelho’s book – people are just crazy about it, and it’s become an industry.

There are plenty of books available if you should aim at making this pilgrimage, and NO, I have not done it, but I’ve been to the cathedral in Santiago and it is indeed impressing.So see the picture here on the right.

In the year 2000 I did a pilgrimage to Mariazell in Austria (picture below) and walked 140km one way from Vienna (in a group, in 3 days, doing some singing + praying during the walk, carrying the holy cross only occasionall, but it was not too much).

Also – this was a "Holy Year" and all my sins were forgiven, and although that’s now 10 years ago – I would not even know what to say at confession as not to waste the priest’s time – but then- I could pretend that my Spanish was really bad and he would not understand me anyway….then again, why walk 840km on the Jakobs-Path through hot, dry and dusty Spain, when you can have the same effect in Austria going to Mariazell again, walking through lushy green woods and shady path with lakes and rivers along the way, and very few people to disturb your contemplation ? Whereas a quarter of a million people would be rather noisy – I’m afraid….but then again , as I said – the Spaniards indeed HAVE something running for them this year – there’s no denying it!

Fifa has spent $70-million (about R535-million) on helping to develop soccer in Africa as a legacy from the 2010 World Cup, but proper governance is needed if the sport is to thrive on the continent, officials said on Wednesday.

Fifa development director Thierry Regenass said professional management of the game in Africa was often lacking and needed to be improved if soccer was to grow.

"Professionalism is an essential aspect to create the basis for the future," he told a news briefing in Johannesburg.  Insiders of All Things African will smile at this remark – of course – because once something is "professional" it’s no longer purely African! Nepotism and curruption  and "unprofessional" dealings are the usual name of the game.

But Regenass carries on:

"We need to invest in not infrastructure but grassroots, youth and professional leagues. This is our objective over the next years because it is through this aspect we will have vibrant national teams."

Africa’s first hosting of the World Cup finals has failed to deliver expected improvement in the competitiveness of its representatives at the finals.

Ghana were the only one of the six African sides to progress past the first round at the tournament in South Africa.

Fifa said it had spent a total of $39-million on building artificial turf fields in 48 countries with three more still to be completed. It said it had also spent a further $14,5-million on training and equipment for African countries in a special development programme, first implemented in 2006.

Each African country also receives an annual grant of $250 000 from Fifa but Regenass said some diverse sources of income were needed if the African game was to grow.

"In Africa, there are usually two sources of income. The government puts money into the national team and Fifa with its financial assistance programme. There needs to be diversified sources of income to development African football," he said.

"There is a strong need for a better youth championships and for the national leagues, which are the heartbeat of football in Africa."

From 1850 to 1970 thereabouts- this was the century of the Cote d’Azur as we know it from all novels – the "La vie en rose" – where everybody and his/her mother within the upper class just HAD to pass some months of the year along the Cote – after or before a shopping trip to Paris, of course.

 There are 2 things I’ll always remember from my 1st visit at the Cote and Nizza with my Father – I was about 5 years old at that time:

1) a miniture horse of the size of a large dog that belonged to a group of gypsies I was so fascinsated by my dad had to actually CARRY me away from it, I was passionately in love with this horse. Had my mopther been along, I would not even have been allowed to touch the animal….since it belonged to gypsies not looking and smelling all too clean…well, you know the rest.

2) a heavenly view of the blue Baie des Anges, which was present in all my future and rather clumsy watercolours – I’m trying to mix this exact blue to this day – unsuccessfully, I’d like to say.

FACIT: It REALLY pays to travel with your kids to places of culture-:) they come home with unforgettable memories!

Whoever wants to have this first, heavenly view of the Baie des Anges (The Bay of Angels) – should just take the lazy way = a lift at the Eastern side of Nizza up to Castle-Mountain. The young and sporty ones will take the steps up to the Colline du Chateau, you are welcome!

The Chateau is but a ruin these days, but it does not matter, because from this wide + large park you have such a breathtaking view – the Mediterreanean shimmers in those turkish-blue coulours you know from famous paintings, the Bay of Angels cozies up softly to the city beach and the broad Promenade des Anglais is brilliantly present with all its prunky old grand historical buildings along its way.
Directly beyond the Colline du Chateau is Vielle Ville – the old town of Nizza, where you have those colourful houses (much loved by aquarell painters-:) in ockre-yellow and rusty-red – which border the Cours Saleya, the most lovely place of the old town.

Every Monday flying merchants from France + Italy are selling Antiques there – really beautiful rare + valuable things, while others sell as well the Kitsch, of course, but if you happen to be there on other days, this is also worth your while, its the place where flowers are being sold (Marche aux Fleurs) fruit and veggies. Small Cafes, Bars and Bistros around the Cours Saleya invite you for a Noisette, the French form of Espresso with foamed up milk, or 2 eights (=125ml) of country wine from the Provence – mostly low in Alcohol, and in the evening you’ll even hear Jazz music if you are lucky.

In the small streets behind the Saleya the shops selling olive oil and soap are crowding each other, ice-saloons and bars + restaurants abound in the old city of Nizza.
What you MUST try +is typical for Nizza – it’s called "Socca" and is this very thin pancake like bread made out of a special flower and olive oil – much like the Indian bread- but even thinner and very special in taste when completly fresh+ crispy coming out of the pan!

As I said above, in the 19th century the British dicovered Nizza as THE preferred EUROPEAN holiday destination in Wintertime. Needless to say – the American were soon to follow – although not much liked – (pecunia non olet (=money does not stink)was the motto of those times (just like it is today).

 
Nowadays you’ll see not so much elegance, of course, rather old and young couples promenading the des Anglais along, arm in arm, the small doggy with strass-collar and leash. In between bikers flashing along, joggers and inline skaters – all of them using and enjoying the luscious space of the Bay of Angels. All those spledid old buildings – starting with the Hotel Negresco, are still lovely, it still smells of old times, you see James Bond with a lovely Blonde on this side desceding from an elegant limo in your phantasy- as they did in one or the other film you have seen.

Now my best travel secret of the Cote d’Azur – don’t eat on the Promenade if you can help it – even a mini-menue is overpriced there and tastes mediocre at best. There’s plenty of alternatives elsewhere.

For all friends of arts- Nizza is heaven. Only Paris has more museums than Nizza. Musee des Beaux Arts Jules Cheret, Musee Matisse in the Villa des Arenes, Musee Chagall and the Musee Archeologique on the noble Hill Cimiez – to mention the most worthy in my very personal view of preferences – I might add!

But for the very young – who usually loath Museums – you have the open Air Art in Nizza at the beginning of the Promendade des Anglais – the Theatre de Verdure – you can enjoy Ballet and Plays of the more modern kind in open air.

Now my next travel secret of Nizza: you take the tram from the Promenade du Paillon and the Jardin d’Albert 1st, and along for 9km you’ll see 14 works (sculptures) of contemporary artists of reknown and lets say – most are impressing – all this for Euro 1,- !! Yep – just Euro 1,-…. while other cities are all saving money etc. – Nizza is lavish to its citicens, it seems, adding new amusements each year.

When the widow of Zar Nikolaus II., Alexandra Feodorowna, moved to Nizza in 1856, troops of rich Russian aristrocrats followed her and with them a competition "who has the most splendid villa" began – a fact we can still enjoy today by looking at them – Cimiez is worth a nice walk – nowadays – those splendid summer villas are often turned into lovely appartments – but you can still feel the "Ancien Regime" around there. And – as mentioned – walk up the hill to the Matisse Museum – directly besides a convent from the 16th century; go in the morning (very few people) and find a quiet corner to enjoy the gardens and the view around the Bay – it’s splendid and unforgettable.

Just a few minutes by car away from Nizza is Cap Ferrat. This most elegant peninsula of the Cote houses one of the most lovely museums – the pink Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild – full of wall carpets from the 15-17th centuries, paintings, furniture, china etc. In the park you get sculputres, fountains and water-plays, and the view from the veranda there is unbelievably beautiful.

Another jewel is villa Kerylos in Beaulieu. This mondane villa was actually only built in the 19th century, but in the style of a Greek Villa with outstanding wallpapers and mosaik floors and all other surroundings, and on this veranda – you’ll have a view where the Mediterrenean is suddenly ultramarin-blue. It will leave you speechless – I promise you!

A potential threat is the heated mood of large youths-bands without perspective in life.  Johnathan  Jansen- a sharp chronist – writes in the Jo’burg Times: "we are breeding a new generation of South Africans that has learnt very early to be furious – deadly furious; and this takes place without parents invervening, and neither teachers nor politicians have ever corrected them. Watch out – South Africa- this is your future!"

And Jansen continues: "these youths will never be educated or employed. They have learnt instinctively, how to kill. They will kill a family for a TV-set, and a pedestrian for his mobile. They will rape someone and walk away calmly.
Not a week passes without police combatting groups of protesters with rubber-bullets and tear-gas. The protesters demand better electricity-supply and sewage-lines, proper housing and jobs.

The Minister of Housing – who would be responsible for these matters, a super-rich man called Tokyo Sexwale, complained beginning of January 2010:- "South Africa has a situation like Haiti – but here it’s a permanent one- a "home-made" desaster."

When Nelson Mandela took over in 1994 – there were only 300 slums nationwide – and today there are 2600 slums.  For several weeks now – the Ministry of Water hides a report according to which only 32 out of South Africa’s 980 water sewage-plants actually FUNCTION satisfactorily.  In many cases – uncleared waste water just runs into rivers and lakes – an anonymous government official declared.

South Africa is First and Third World – At the same time !

In the face of such a mess – which is almost always due to incompetence, lazyness and corruption – it comes as no surprise that citicens of 280 communities within the National Unity of Tax-Payers have decided to pay their property-tax to an "special account" – until matters are corrected.

Email and mobiles contrast with stone-old rural traditions, luxury-villas with tin-huts, gleaming noble cars with rosting collective-taxis….; the apparent wealth of the country is based on the immeasurable precious metals and diamonds in the ground, but this has always been "relative". Half of the population lives on or below poverty line, twelve million get social-care, not even six million actually pay tax.

For all the latter – it sounds like an irony when R.S.A officials proclaim – "this will be the BEST  Soccer Worldcup of all times!"

Now folks, when you are born in the Austrian mountain region, like me, you are practically born with skies on your feet.

And saying this – you are always out for new adventures on skies.  Having Russian friends is a big advantage – as they are sure to make crazy plans  for your next skiing trip- like to Novosibirsk (in Winter- note) when we stepped out of the plane it was relatively "warm" – i.e. 27degrees Celsius minus "only". 

And although I was wearing "arctic" outfits, I was shivering like a rabbit.  So- off we went by TRAIN to visit Sheregesh Ski Arena – one of Russia’s  best kept travel secrets in skiing- right on the border to Mongolia.  Russians just LOVE riding by train, and this is even affordable to middle class Russians, Euro 100 per person for this trip in a 4-berth cubicle.  The train is packed with people, we are going 600km one way to Sheregesh, on a Friday.  As soon as the train starts to roll- people unpack their picknicks – and snacks and specialities are offered around to "taste" them. As usual, the vodka bottle is not long in the hiding, but we also get nice hot tea from the train service. 

Also in the train, you can borrow or rather rent skiers or snowboards- for those who have come without such equipment – like me.  Somewhere along the way the train stops to get fresh coal – people go outside to uncramp their feet and – believe it or not – buy ICECREAM from a vendor.  I’m sticking to the tea – boy – it’s absolutely freezing outside.  We arrive in the morning and stepping outside to a winter-wonderland.

The landscape is breathtaking. 60km of well prepared skiing slopes (7 to be exact) and a modern 6 person lift are awaiting the passengers, brilliant sun- all is perfect – except for the incredible COLD.  To warm myself up, I decide to do crosscountry skiing first, and only then use the lift for downhill skiing.  The fresh snow and crystal clear air without any dirt from traffic or industry is just out of this world. 

The evening comes – and with it a Russian  Disco – in open air, of course, people are dancing and shaking, and I join voluntarily – for if I’d stand still I’d freeze to the floor in a jiffy. The crazy but dishy looking disc-jockey is undressing his shirt and rubbing his naked body with snow.  Just looking at him makes me shiver twice as fast. You could use a Russian sauna- outdoors – of course – but the mere thought of going there in my bathrobe lets me drop the idea immediately. So rather sooner than later we retire to the warm train and watch the young folks enjoying themselves.

Tired from all the exercise, everbody goes off to sleep realtively early in the train – after another elaborate dinner with nice chat + singing+partying.

The next morning is overcast and a snowstorm at 120km/hr is racing down the mountains.  This does not stop some really brave folks from skiing – although you can see absolutely nothing.  Lifts don’t work – but they just walk up. Around lunchtime I decide to prove my bravery by riding down a slope on a car tire, which twists around so much, I don’t know where I’m going, but somehow I land downhill without having collided with anyone or anything, laughing my head off. 

It’s something I’ve never done before, you’d be too embarassed to do this in an Austrian skiing resort, anyway. Sunday the train leaves – another 16hrs ride back to Novosibirsk, where most people are leaving right to work on Monday morning.

We spend the day visiting friends and having a lavish lunch, after which we really use a Russian Sauna – splendid!  In between the sweating more delicacies are served – and again the vodka and tea appear out of thin air.  What a spledid way to idle away a full afternoon and evening. 

There’s one thing for sure – you make great friends on such a trip, get to taste lovely Russian specialities like pickled mushrooms and onions or ghurkins which somebody’s granny has lovingly prepared, drink absolutely the best vodka in the country – as everybody has some secret source for his supply and do some phantastic skiing, have so much fun that your cheek- muscles hurt with all the laughter. . But – I does help if you speak Russian – even if only a little – to fully enjoy this.

My heart is lost to the Altai Region – I simply MUST return there soon, but – in Summer – definitely in Summer.  As I suffer the cold poorly. Skiing at minus 40 degrees Celsius- no – thank you Sir – not again!

I was shivering so much during the trip, that I was phantasizing about another recent holiday in Maui, where we stayed in this absolutely luxurious and lavish Kahana Falls Resort at Maui- Hawaii, for a price of $ 287,- for a week, at 27 degrees Celsius PLUS.  Speaking about Hawaii to a Sibirian man makes his eyes roll around  in the sockets.  I only had about 50 business cards in my bag – I had to give them all out, they were actually pulled out of my hand.

But guess what – several of my new Russian friends emailed me about my GRN travel membership,  and joined immediatey after gathering the info on some webinars.  You have to give it to Russians – the SEE opportunity, when it’s in front of them – and grab it. That trips was surely phantastic – in all aspects…I’m not one to brag about how much money I made – because I’ll admit – maybe the tax people are after me – and I’m not any kind of guru – just a normal person who loves sports and adventure – I have a talent for languages – as I speak 7 – Russian amongst them – but it’s in no way perfect – and I’m not always on the fast lane – sometimes just relaxing slow times while  learning about whatever  fascinates me – I enjoy this also – it’s a lifestyle I have chosen, and all friends from youth can’t understand – but they are professors, politicians – higher bank employees – whatever – they could never imagine it – or rather – DARE it.  Their fixpoint always was a kind of security that – as they only discover now – does not really exist.  Younger Russians KNOW that such security does not actually exist.   Beinglocked in behind the iron curtain for so long – they LOVE to travel, and love to do it with friends and/or family. And they love luxury. Getting luxury for cheap is – well – what more can you ask? Going to the most lovely places on earth – it’s a never ending dream.  Russians don’t LIKE to be pressed into international "guided" tours. They hate it. They are adventurouse enough to venture things on their own – someone of the group is always fluent in English – they’ll hire a guide of their own – if needed – but mostly – they’ll just enjoy staying at a lovely luxury resort and take what’s on offer there.  If they decide to return – they might want more – but most likely – they look for a NEW place to go. DISCOVER THE WORLD – is their motto. Rightly so.

Only so much – - this crazy skiing trip to Sheregesh it was a KILLING – because I earn $1000,- for every new person I recruit into the GRN membership – and THEY in turn – earn the same amount, when THEY recruit someone. And in case you ask – of COURSE GRN has NO  accommodation for hire in this remote place -  nobody has – guess why we slept on the train???Because we can’t afford any better? It’s about the ADVENTURE !! It’s all about meeting new like-minded people – learning to love and understand each other. Making business is NOT a numbers game – as the gurus tell you – it’s about TRULY loving and understanding people and their desires, their wants and dreams -  and understanding WHY they would love to do what you do. I NEVER recruit anyone  – ALL I DO IS INFORM THEM   give access to the system – I might supply more info by phone which they have presently no access to- as a non-member -  – just for info – and I never lie

I’ll tell them – no general info is available by the system in Russian – it’s just in English, lecutures in Spanish and Portugese – at certain times.For Russians – this is NO PROBLEM  – they either speak good English themselves – or have close friends/relatives  doing  it all for them.

This may hurt some of my US-readers – but – the aberage Russians I have met – are 10 times better educated than the average US-persons I’ve met. So – even if they don’t speak English fluently – they know how and where to get what  they don’t understand and know. I have – in general- high respect of these people – and believe me – they are no fools – quite the opposite is true. And all these really sampathetic people are making the best of a rather bad situation – and are doing it successfully and – in most of all casess – also LEGALLY. The average Russian is a law abiding and very passionate patriot – and what’s wrong with that?

And where the LAW  was not fast enough to catch up with real life – well – he’ll just proceed – and find a way. Find a way to make life as it is NOW – where he has to make his living NOW – and not to some distant dream – like the "Soviet dream" -of the ever fowarding 5 year plans -  that never came about. 

Fact is – even in my home country – = Austria  I find that politics is 10-20 years behind REALITY-  as is social law and all kinds of laws  in connection therewith –

European Community Laws are 10-20 years BEHIND reality. -Meaning – laws don’t  conform to what – AS LIFE IS RIGHT NOW. I don’t know about USA – but I guess it’s not far different.

This – and much more – you’ll  learn when travelling and speaking to many people.  Seeing – how much we HAVE IN COMMON – and it’s  more than what divides us!! This is WHAT REALLY FASCINATES ME.

We don’t start any kind of revolution – but we just live our lives. That’s all …..we are the ones who slip and slide —no heroes there wanting to change society for ever – you’ll not find the kinds of Stalins and Hitlers, Mussolinis, Nixon, or Bushes who see the enemy behind every bush. There ARE no enemies – there are just people – trying to live a life – finding a LIFESTYLE for themselves.

Those that want to change the world – are those 1 in 1000 billions  – we are not cut out for that.  We are the ones making the best of a "funny"- in a cynical sense -  world – realizing – how mightless we are – but at the same time – making the best of what we have – ONE life – as long as our Creator grants it – and having as much  fun out of it has we can – and enjoying it. We ARE  responsible – yes – as our GRN  – membership goes down to our kids. What more can you ask? Even if we lose everything in money – this is here to enjoy for those we love.  For the next 100 years – that’s SOMETHING!

Holidays are all about parties. And parties means you’d probably need to get an appropriate gift for the host. It’ll be great if all the parties were written down on a calnder. Then, you can just go shopping and in one swoop, you can buy all the gifts at one go.

For the kids particularly its important to get something they will really enjoy to play this school break. For babies perhaps some baby bath toys for them to play with or some cars transformers for the younger kids to play with. This year a Nintendo Wii black helmet will be the most awesome gift a teenager would love to get. You want to be looking to get things that are fun and can be played with, not anything too practical.

And then there is the meal. What sort of meat will you dish up, and what vegetables will you serve? A traditional turkey with stuffing and all the usual trimmings is never far off the mark. Depending on the size of the table you can never go wrong with several desserts at the end, with cheese, crackers and mulled wine to polish things off.

However you choose to enjoy your own holiday, the most important thing to remember is what it all represents and to enjoy the time you can with the people closest to you.

The Egyptian Museum

Located in Cairo, the Egyptian Museum is home to over 120,000 items of treasured found around Egypt. The Great Sphynx is the largest statue created from one piece of stone. Believed to date back to 3000BC, it has the body of a lion and the head of a human, built by the Ancient Egyptians. The Sphynx was buried up to its neck in sand until the 1920s when it was fully uncovered.
